Because the Natural World is Awesome...

New images mostly every day, fresh from Virginia Beach... featuring Sunrises and the Magic that happens where the Sky, the Surf, and the Sand collide and mix into that Mystical State we call the Beach...
So, sit back and enjoy the view... although all the Elements are the same, they mix in entirely different and exciting ways every day... if you can't actually be on the Beach, I'll show you how it was...

Chilly Yesterday at the Beach...

A 30-30 day, 30 degrees, with gusts to 30 knots...
As usual, those high pressure systems that blow on in bring those bright blue skies...
Here you can see the foam and sand blowin' south...

More from Saturday...

Here's a few more images from yesterday's Sunrise...

A pair of diving ducks work the pre-dawn surf...
They dive and swim underwater to hunt small fish and crabs...

My new neighbor takes his young twins out in a double stroller every morning for a run... the dog comes, too... this morning he tried the Beach, but he's gonna have to get some of those fat tires if he's gonna do this often...

Here's a link to a video of yesterday's Sunrise...

A Little Sparkle in the Sunrise at 48th Street, VB

Gettin' a little chilly at the Beach...
Freezing this morning...
Guess it should be, it's almost mid-winter...
Winds are still offshore, but calmer...
It's a clear morning, but there were some clouds,
just in the right place to harmonize with the gentle waves...

Offshore Breeze at 42nd Street, VB...

...held down the waves today and blew back the spray as they crashed the shoreline...
High pressure poured in the west wind and kept the sky clear and blue...
Gusts up to 60 and temps in the 40s made it rough out there...
But the pictures are pretty...

Witch Hazel

Common Witch Hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, a small tree, ranging up to twenty to thirty feet tall, grows along most of the east coast and ranges west to Nebraska and Arkansas in moist woods, often along stream banks.
They usually flower between Halloween and Christmas, but with the mild winter we are enjoying in Virginia, don't be surprised to find them in bloom as you enjoy a woodsy winter hike or hit some of the mountain trout streams...

I used to grow the native and some of the hybrid witch hazels, which would commonly bloom on milder days in January and February. The thin, straplike petals would roll up and retreat back into the buds when temperatures dropped below freezing, reemerging as the morning Sun warmed the buds...

Thunder Surf at 48th Street, VB

What a difference a day makes...
The Ocean was like a lake yesterday,
this morning i could hear the surf booming before i could see it...
A nice swell came in overnight, and the west winds are shaping it up...
Should be a happy day for the surfers...

Wednesday Morning, 42nd Street, VB

Wednesday... middle of the week...
late morning, middle of the day...
Overcast, a little rainy...
Not too warm, not too chilly...
Not much of a breeze...
Not really any waves...
Ocean's like a lake...
Clouds hide the sky...
Almost a little bland...
Down at the Beach today...

But, still a good time to wander the Beach...

And it was nice enough for the kids to play for a while...

Chilly, Wet, and Raw at 42nd Street, VB

The warm, sunny days have gone...
it's chilly, wet, and raw,
down at the Beach today...

Nor'east winds blow scuds of foam across the tideline...
Birds hunker down and fluff against the chill...
Lonesome Navy Ship prowls the horizon...
A solitary woman walks the dog...
Chilly, wet, raw, and bleak...
Hardcore Beach today...

Pelican Sunset, 1.8.12, 48th Street, VB

Sunset yesterday...
A flock of Pelicans head North on a mild evening,
dark silhouettes against a soft, pastel sky...
A gentle breeze off the calm waters
pushes the Sun past the beach houses...
Winding down a beautiful Beach weekend...

Full Moon Rising Over the Ocean and a Setting Sun, Too, at 48th Street, VB, 1.8.12

The delicate layering of the cloud reminds me of the oysters i sauteed for breakfast this morning, and the salt air wafting in on the Nor'East breeze reinforces that vision with that wonderful, sweet, sea smell... just like the oysters when you open them...

A Gull gives the Beach a final inspection before settling in for the night..

Off to the South, the setting Sun shoots out it's last rays for this side of the planet, as it rounds the bend and prepares to wake up Japan and China...

More From Yesterday's Sunrise...

Here' some more images from yesterday's fantastic Sunrise...
these are looking south from 48th Street...

And one looking north...

Sunrise for the Birds, 1.7.12, 48th Street, VB

The gulls are out looking for an early breakfast, trying to take advantage of small bait fish which often rise to the surface during the night to day light transition...

This guy kept looking at me like i was going to toss him some Cheetos or similar crap...
It's a shame that the tourons here think it's cool to feed the local gulls all sorts of junkfood to attract a swarm of them... Seabirds have evolved to take advantage of a high-protein seafood diet and can become undernourished on a diet high in junkfood, making them feel full, but not supplying what they need... In the wild, a stressed animal becomes more likely to be caught and eaten by a predator, so you are not doing these guys any favors by tossing them a handful of chips...

A raft of ducks paddled by, but now, as the light grows, they feel confident to take off and continue their southward journey by air...
A pair of Pelicans also head south, flying low to spot small fish they can dive on and catch...
