Porpoise Surf, 48th Street, VB

The last few nights and days have been our coldest of the season, leaving us bummed and shivering... This morning it turned around, and started a warming trend, almost reaching 70 today. This morning the Beach looked summery, and Flipper showed up too...

The Oceanfront has been busy the last two weeks, or so, with the Striped Bass, or rockfish, in abundance as they migrate down the coast, and a surprise showing of Bluefin Tuna ranging from 100 to well over 200 lbs. mixing in with them from Cape Henry to the North Beach area. Every morning, the fishing fleet can be seen, sometimes less than a mile off the beach, sometimes distant on the horizon.

This morning the Sun was bright, and it looked and felt warm.

The big fish are there because there are smaller fish to feed on, mostly adult menhaden, or, bunker, but some smaller bunker, too. The birds are also keyed in on them, with gulls, terns, and pelicans patrolling the waters.

There's a Common Dolphin rolling just past the surfline. I haven't seen them lately, but they showed up this morning in larger pods than i usually see in warmer weather.

The white specks on the horizon is the southern edge of the fleet, looking for stripers and tuna.

There's a mixed pod of Common and Bottle Nose Dolphin feeding in this last image...
