Witch Hazel

Common Witch Hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, a small tree, ranging up to twenty to thirty feet tall, grows along most of the east coast and ranges west to Nebraska and Arkansas in moist woods, often along stream banks. 
They usually flower between Halloween and Christmas, but with the mild winter we are enjoying in Virginia, don't be surprised to find them in bloom as you enjoy a woodsy winter hike or hit some of the mountain trout streams...

I used to grow the native and some of the hybrid witch hazels, which would commonly bloom on milder days in January and February. The thin, straplike petals would roll up and retreat back into the buds when temperatures dropped below freezing, reemerging as the morning Sun warmed the buds...
